Contemporary Lakefront Home: Rustic sophistication
Home interior remodel; Waupaca, Wisconsin: The original design of this lakeside home featured a pseudo-classical European design popular in the 1980s, with high arches, intricate metal balustrades, and solid wooden cabinetry. The lake view from the wall of windows was obstructed by some of the original design elements. The owner wanted a simple, clean design that didn’t distract from the natural beauty that surrounds the home, creating a peaceful retreat for his family.
Highlights of the Remodel:
-
The open floor plan seamlessly connects the dining room, kitchen, and living room, allowing the family to stay connected while enjoying separate spaces.
-
One-of-a-kind, custom-made wet bar will still be the center of attention with a reclaimed tin tile backsplash, Quartz countertop, wine fridge, ice maker, and beverage center.
-
Showstopping custom-designed kitchen island made of Spalted Maple and zinc, reminiscent of a hand-hewn boat.
-
Unique lighting element created by the architect using the skeleton of an antique canoe, wrapped in canvas.
-
Luxurious walk-in shower and driftwood lighting element in the primary bathroom.
Challenges and Solutions:
Quirky Design Choices: An oddly placed pantry room was acting as a support for the upper floor. To open the space, it would need to be removed. The load point was moved and a long structural beam added, simplifying the layout for better flow.
Behind Door Number One: Originally a door to the garage was right next to the front door. Since there was another door from the garage to the kitchen, this superfluous door was removed to make space in the front entry for custom-made cabinetry with a full-length bench.
Visual Mayhem: The wet bar counter and cabinetry in the living room looked like part of the kitchen and were too close to the fireplace. Worse, the balcony right above it added to the confusion. Removing the balcony, relocating the wet bar and centering the gas fireplace brought a modern serenity to the space.
Unexpected Discovery: The initial examination of the home revealed cracks in the wall, evidence that the garage had settled 3" and needed to be stabilized. To repair, nine helical piers were installed 90' below grade, attached to footings to raise the floor to the required level.
The homeowner wanted a simple, clean design that embraced the home’s natural surroundings. The architect’s vision was to pay homage to the rustic appeal of a lake cabin, but in a contemporary way. To achieve their goals, natural materials were used to create a simple backdrop to the stunning lakeside views. The cleaner design is understated yet visually striking, providing a space to breathe, relax, and recharge.
